Being a working mother of 4, I had my share of undesirable childcare experiences in the past. So, I was skeptical when a friend from work suggested the Y. To my surprise, the Lebanon YMCA childcare has exceeded my expectation.
From day one to present, I can list many specific positive interactions with the Y staff that gave me the assurance my children were in the best setting possible. What strikes me the most is that these program coordinators go out of their way and take the time to hear each individual story. They really wanted to know my family and my situation, which is something that I did not expect.
I am so used to just being “pushed through the process,” that I assumed that was the “norm” for every program. Lebanon’s Y program is not the “norm.” Making “surprise visits” to the childcare often left me pleasantly surprised. I’ve walked in on painting projects, hall ball, playing with trucks, exercise activities, book reading, and dancing. Or I would be visually picking my son out of a group of running children, all having fun with “splash time.”
Even the teachers that are not my own children’s classroom teachers are still attentive to and hold some type of a relationship with my children. I know for sure that everyone in that building knows my Leo and Eli. Every teacher in the building goes out of their way to mention positive things that my children have done throughout the day. Their awareness and compliments give me the guarantee that my children are having a fun and productive day without me.
Of course, I would rather be home with my children than working all day. But I have to admit, I think that my children are developing better by interacting with other children than they would all alone in a home setting. I chose to write this statement not only to tell “My Y Story,” but more as a Thank You to everyone in the program who is so very clearly “Giving it Their All!” The operations of the staff members and of the program lead me to view the setting as more of a “community” or a “family” rather than just childcare. I would suggest the Lebanon YMCA to any parent who was looking for great childcare.
